New Apartment Complex for Adults with Autism

Construction is underway on a new apartment complex designed specifically for adults with autism. The building, Thrive, will feature 32 one-bedroom apartments and one studio, with 24/7 on-site support available.

Located in New Jersey, the apartments will include features such as low-voltage lighting, automatic shut-off faucets and ovens and sensory-friendly gathering spaces like a teaching kitchen and wellness rooms.

The project was developed by Karen Fluharty, founder of Parents with a Plan, a nonprofit focused on housing solutions for young adults with disabilities.

“We’re excited the shovels are in the ground,” Fluharty said, who started the project after a lengthy search for housing for her son when he aged out of services.

This complex is a partnership with Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services, which will provide clinical support and life skills training to residents.Demand has been strong, with nearly 50 applicants even before construction began. Thrive is expected to open in early 2027.

“Thrive is a real demonstration of that. Autistic and other neurodiverse people deserve to have beautiful, excellent places to live,” said Christopher J. Manente, executive director of Rutgers Center for Adult Autism Services.

This will serve as an example of what inclusive housing can achieve and hopes this project will inspire similar efforts everywhere.
