Purple Alert Bill Would Help Find Missing People with Disabilities

House Bill 6165 and Senate Bill 983 would establish a Purple Alert system in Rhode Island to help find missing people with physical or cognitive disabilities.

Right now, the state lacks a coordinated alert system for missing people with disabilities. This legislation would close that gap and help save lives.

Five states have already implemented similar systems, saving hundreds of lives.

WHAT IT DOES

  • Creates a Purple Alert system to quickly share information when someone with a cognitive or physical disability goes missing.
  • Builds on the existing emergency alert systems (like AMBER and SILVER alerts) to increase response speed and community awareness.
  • Allows law enforcement and media to coordinate outreach through emergency alerts, signage and communications.

NEXT STEPS & SUPPORT

The bills were introduced by Rep. Tina Spears and Senator Todd Patalano, with the support of 20 lawmakers across the General Assembly.

The bill has been introduced and will need strong public support to move forward. Raising awareness now can make a major difference.
