Walmart Launches Free Visual Interpreter Program for Shoppers with Disabilities

Walmart is making it easier for customers with disabilities to shop independently by launching a new program that provides free access to visual interpreters in stores and online.

In partnership with Aira, a third-party service provider, Walmart is offering real-time support to customers, helping them navigate aisles, read labels and understand signage.

The service works by using the Aira mobile app where customers can stream live video of their surroundings. A trained visual interpreter then provides detailed, objective feedback, allowing customers to make informed choices at their own pace.

This new initiative is just the latest in a series of accessibility improvements Walmart has introduced to make shopping more inclusive.

“We want to make sure our customers with disabilities have just as good, if not better, shopping experiences as anyone else,” said Gayatri Agnew, head of Walmart’s Accessibility Center of Excellence.

In addition to the Aira program, Walmart has rolled out sensory-friendly shopping hours, made Caroline’s Cart available in every store and expanded its range of adaptive products.
