Direct Support Professionals (or DSPs) work to empower people with disabilities.
They provide support while working to meet people’s needs and help make dreams come true. Daily tasks can range from helping someone get dressed to supporting someone at a job.
Beyond day-to-day support, DSPs often help people access resources and understand their rights. Their advocacy can range from helping someone accessing services and accommodations to supporting people as they navigate larger systems and policies that affect their lives. DSPs work alongside the people they support, helping them make choices and maintain independence.
Working as a DSP also offers opportunities for career growth. Many people start as DSPs and move into training, supervisory or management roles. Others specialize in areas like employment services or behavioral support. Apprenticeships, certifications and other training programs can help workers build new skills and advance in their careers.
Direct Support Professionals are a key part of the disability services system. Their work empowers community living, employment and inclusion across the country.
